Acquiring Daylilies
There are many ways to acquire new daylilies to add to your collection. Purchasing plants from local, regional, national and international sources are an option. Because daylilies have thick tuberous roots, they can be stripped of soil and sent bare root through the mail. Purchasing daylilies in containers is also a popular option. As your collection grows and your daylilies multiply naturally, trading daylilies with other members of the Daylily Growers of Dallas may become a great way to bring new colors to your landscape.
Most retailers and growers prefer to sell daylilies around mid-May to June, as this is when most plants are in peak bloom and this allows the buyer to observe the flowering habits of a particular cultivar and choose accordingly. Daylilies can be purchased at any time of the year. However, if daylilies are to be planted directly into a garden at the time of purchase, the optimum times in the North Texas area are early spring (late March-April) and early fall (mid September-October).
